Our Proven Phoenix Method

At Phoenix, we offer courses for Year 11 and Year 12 students covering the entire syllabus in Mathematics, Mathematics Extension 1 and Mathematics Extension 2 through our system of small structured group lessons combined with individual assistance in weekly tutorials. The system is as follows:

Lessons are where theory is taught, concepts conveyed, and examples are worked through, step-by-step. Small group lessons are the most effective way of learning maths. They provide an ideal atmosphere for imparting the knowledge required to master any concept. While the content of each lesson ensures that you cover the material comprehensively, lessons are kept enjoyable and practical. After all, the subject you enjoy is the subject you excel in.

Topics are broken down into components each developing an aspect of the topic so that you can gain an overall understanding - examining each one step-by-step. By working through examples at each stage, concepts are made simple. At every opportunity you are encouraged to ask questions and discuss concepts in an interactive learning atmosphere.

Phoenix worksheets contain exam style questions of all difficulties to hammer home the concepts. At the end of each weekly session, you receive a specially designed Phoenix worksheet with questions based on the type found in recent trial and HSC papers. Each worksheet contains three sections with questions ranging from the very basic to the most challenging. Each worksheet reinforces topics covered in the lessons, providing you with extra practice.

Tutorials are where concepts are consolidated and errors are eradicated. In a Phoenix Tutorial you receive individual assistance from your class teacher. It is here that you can work through any problems encountered in a worksheet, get on top of difficulties and have concepts reinforced. Your class teacher has the opportunity to explain where problems are arising and where fundamental errors are being made. With the assistance given in the tutorials you will be able to address these errors and strengthen your grasp of the topic. All achievements are recorded so that you can assess your progress at any time.

Assessment Preparation tutorials are designed to revise key concepts and cover typical exam questions that you can expect. School based assessments are an important component of the HSC. From term four of Year 11, various assessment tasks including the Trial HSC Examinations are used to determine your rank and constitute up to 50 percent of your final HSC mark in Mathematics. As the overall assessment mark is as important as the HSC exam mark itself, each assessment task is significant and preparation must be thorough. It may be that your school progresses through the syllabus in a different order of topics, and at a different pace to the Phoenix programme, so if you have an assessment looming on a topic we haven’t yet covered, simply let us know in advance and we will arrange an Assessment Prepoaration tutorial specifically to cover your desired topics.

Exams are where concepts are reinforced and weaknesses are highlighted. Exams are strategically scheduled throughout the year to prepare you for school half-yearly and trial exams. In the weeks running up to the HSC, exams are prepared each week to reduce exam nerves and to build exam confidence required for the best results. Phoenix exams cover the syllabus and include favourite questions most commonly asked in HSC and Trial exams.

The exams are designed to reinforce all the material you have learnt and to highlight areas that may need extra attention. Any weaker areas are immediately addressed in a post-exam analysis and re-attempted at the tutorials. You learn to conquer exam nerves and are taught the benefits of a regular study pattern, suited to your individual needs. Best of all you are taught exam techniques to maximise your speed and performance under pressure. By the time the HSC comes around, everything is under control.
